The Skinny on Whole Grains
I have noticed a new trend at the grocery store - whole grains! This is great because whole grains are indeed healthier. They have 25 percent more protein, 78 percent more fiber and 90 percent more vitamin E than refined flour. (Fitness Magazine, October 2011) While shopping don't fall victim to misleading packaging.
The label should read 100 percent whole grain NOT made with whole grains. Products that are simply 'made with whole grains' are often largely composed of refined flour. Refined flour goes through a whitening/bleaching process where the flour is stripped of vitamins and minerals in order to create a desired texture and color. The flour is then enriched when vitamins and minerals are added to the flour to enhance its nutritional value. Unfortunately even after being enriched it doe not reagin its original value.
When purchasing whole grain products make sure that they have at least three to four grams of of fiber. Reading labels can be time consuming but now it has become a habit for me! As soon as I pick up a product I check the ingredients immediately.
